Decoding Live Streaming – New Technology Empowering You To Earn and Keep More Business
MPEG-DASH, Apple HLS, Adobe HDS, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and that is just the options you have to deliver live streams to your subscribers. We understand that managing your subscription video business is complicated enough. That’s why we do our best to make sure all the complex technical components that support your business, just work.
In all most all of our product decision we are constantly taking the approach of how can we provide the best in class experience and still remove as much complexity as possible. Intelivideo live streaming is another addition to the platform and that is exactly what we have done.
Our live streaming solution is the easiest way to offer live streaming to your current and future subscribers. We allow you to stream video to only your subscribers or publicly to promote your subscription business. Our number one goal was to make it simple enough that you can not interfere with your day to day business, and here is just some of the ways we made that happen.
Getting start with Intelivideo Live Streaming
Our platform has the best content management features on the market. You can take your content and add it to collections, subscriptions, categories, we even allow you to feature your latest content and promote the most recent additions for you. With live video it is no different. Just ask your customer success architect about how to get started and we will provision your account and you are all set. You will now have the addition of one simple button:
You will now be able to add a new media type of live stream. That is it! No setting up servers, content delivery networks, complex operation teams. We take care of all that and you just get in front of the camera and do what you do.
What you aren’t doing?
[ NOTE: Being that this is a technical post I will do my best to provide a technical description of what we are doing to make all this happen but at the same time keep it as simple as possible so it can be understood by more.]
Once your account is provisioned you will now be able to take advantage of live streaming. We have spent countless hours determining what the best combination of servers, CDNs, transrating configurations to best deliver your live stream to your subscribers. Below is a diagram of what that looks like for you, I will also go into a little bit more of what Intelivideo does behind the scenes.
Depending on your setup we will either allocate streaming infrastructure to your account as you need it or if you need dedicated infrastructure to handle your demand we can also support that. Our basic setup is to support the number of concurrent streams that you need at any given time. On our end a live stream requires a target for you to point your RTMP stream to. You can use a target 24 hours a day as part of your streaming plan and can sign up for as many as you need. Once your event is ready to start you will request an available target ( if you’re paying for one you will always get one ). Now that you have a target you will input the information provided in the software you intend to stream with. The image below shows what that might look like.
If you decide to reschedule your live stream you can just release the target and schedule it for a later date. Once you have your software configure and are broadcasting we will detect your stream and start a preview player for you.
We provide the total uptime and bytes in of the incoming stream to our servers and also the current bytes in rate. After we have completed analyzing the incoming stream you will be able to preview the stream before going live. Once you are happy with what you see you can take your live stream on air and available to your subscribers.
Your live stream is distributed to your subscribers over a CDN and is available to your subscribers transrated into 3 additional bitrates to make sure your subscribers can tune in even in some of the most adverse bandwidth conditions.
What you are doing?
Above we covered some of the things that the Intelivideo platform is taking care of for you. All you have to do is complete the simple form to schedule your live event.
Now that you have scheduled your live stream all you need to do is come back to the Backlot on the day of your live stream get your streaming target provided by the Intelivideo Platform, configure your streaming software, and Go Live!
Some platforms provide live stream recording on the server. While we could provide that service, during our testing we found that it is best to do the recording on your end, to ensure the best quality recording. An additional benefit to doing it this way is you can make some final edits prior to uploading the finished video to the Backlot.
The only technical things you need to worry about are the are the following:
- Up bandwidth > 4 Mbps
- Camera and/or Software to create RTMP stream
- Configure output to connect to Intelivideo Platform
- Click Go Live
That is it, no need to worry about anything else.
