We recently caught up with one of our clients, Johan Garey of JohnGareyTV.com. He graciously hosted us in his studio to sit down with him for a few minutes and talk about his online subscription video business. Garey is a fitness and pilates instructor who owns his own studio (John Garey Fitness & Pilates) and also runs John Garey TV online. His primary audience is pilates instructors who follow Garey for updated training techniques, continuing education and their own fitness program.
At one point, he mentioned instructors were coming up to him in his teaching travels asking him how he was able to get started–what were his first tips and tricks for initiating this venture? We thought Garey’s advice would fit across the board of Intelivideo clients and other businesses looking to get a start in Video On Demand.

Love what you do.
Know what you want. Understand what you’re video content is going to be and find what makes you unique in that area! Make sure it’s content that you are comfortable and passionate about and let your personality shine on camera.
Build your audience.
Having a “fan base” established is key and is important for your launch. What better way to start building your audience than social media! You may already have a following there, so make sure you’re always posting content your followers can benefit from, like a short workout video of the day. The more social media presence you have, the more followers you gain and keep!
It’s important that you put out content consistently. Always have a plan for posts and set up a schedule that organizes when you post new video content; whether its daily or once a week.
Have pre-developed content ready.
In order to have a steady and successful launch, it’s important to have a plan developed and have content ready to post. No one is going to subscribe to a channel that has no content. If you’re having a hard time figuring out what that plan is, keep brainstorming and developing. It’s all about the practice! Don’t be someone else; create your own original content.
Understand that your content may not be perfect at first. Don’t be afraid if your content isn’t good at first, you’re only beginning. The only way to get skilled at it is to do it consistently! Start developing, start practicing! Soon you will have the perfect plan and know exactly the style and content that works best for you and your On-Demand channel. Taking the first step is the first step!
Are you thinking about starting your own SVOD business but don’t know where to start? It’s completely normal to feel uncertain about what steps to take.
