This past week’s episode of Friday Live was streamed live from Denver Startup Week’s Basecamp! The Intelivideo team moved its entire broadcasting studio from the HQ in Broomfield, CO to Downtown Denver to host DSW Live, for Denver Startup Week 2018 – the largest free entrepreneurial event in North America.
Matt and Ashley spoke with several guests from the OTT space during their time at Denver Startup Week. Episode 51 of Friday Live covered their interview with Bassil El-Khatib, Co-Founder of Qwa Media. Qwa Media specializes in providing consulting services to OTT businesses, offering guidance in content, distribution, technology and more.
Why is OTT growing so fast?
Kicking things off, Matt asked Bassil about the OTT space – Why did it pop up and why is it growing so fast? Bassil explained that consumers are starting to “vote” in terms of their dollar spending. They’re evaluating cable packages and streaming services and deciding what’s best for them and where they want to spend their money. Streaming devices, such as Roku, are affordable, easy to use, and provide consumers with choices. Not to mention, the internet has become much more advanced over the years, making video streaming easier and better quality.
Who’s leading the cord-cutting trend?
Ashley asked Bassil about the main demographics consuming streaming services. Although many would automatically assume millennials are leading the cord-cutting trend, Bassil explained that it’s actually more so 30- to 50-year-olds. The most common consumers are households with children, not necessarily your “cutting edge” audience.
Is there room for niche content in the OTT space?
Wrapping things up, Matt and Ashley asked Bassil about niche content. While there are a few big players leading the way in the OTT space (Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV, etc.), is there still a room for tier two, niche companies to make a name for themselves? Absolutely, says Bassil. Many people are gravitating towards streaming services, yet they often lack the “packages” found through traditional TV. Opportunity lies in developing niche channels, specifically catered towards the unique interests of consumers.
