Friends in Finance
In 2006, an Oprah series called Debt Diet sparked a big idea for Sandra and some of her savvy girlfriends with big career and life aspirations. Instead of creating a book club like other friends and colleagues their age, this group of women started a “money club” where they worked together to tackle questions and issues related to personal finances in a way that helped them achieve their goals.
“It was pretty amazing,” recalls Sandra. “My girlfriends and I had no real financial planning or professional education around personal finances. We were just very motivated, young professionals who were drowning in debt and knew we wanted to turn things around for ourselves financially.”
Over the course of a year, Sandra and her money club were able to collectively pay off $50,000 in debt and increase their salaries over $100,000, while putting over $40,000 in the bank and making some smart investments.
Sandra’s story, backed by the impressive results she and her friends had achieved in just one year caught the eye of Oprah herself. They were invited to Oprah’s stage and instantly in the public eye, people began looking to them for advice on how to achieve their own financial success. Soon after, Smart Cookies was born! Their new company was designed to help others implement systems and achieve the same financial freedom these women had created for themselves.
From Casual Money Club to Money Making Business
With a large audience eager to learn strategies for getting out of debt, increasing net worth and achieving financial freedom, Sandra and her friends had a real business opportunity on their hands. And they’ve enjoyed plenty of media attention along the way.
In the years following their Oprah feature, Sandra and Smart Cookies have been featured on the Today Show, CNN and the New York Times sharing their finance smarts with others. Their business also includes two book deals (The Guide to Making More Dough and Getting Out of Debt and The Guide Couples and Money) published by Random House and they’ve even produced and starred in their own Smart Cookies television series. Having seen great success early on, their challenges came later when it came time to grow and scale their business and products.
With a Smart Cookies community 50,000 strong, speaking opportunities, a thriving affiliate program, engaged customer base and expertise in product presells, offering digital products was a natural next step for expansion. “We had a video product that we knew would help other people and we had a massive and incredibly engaged audience who were ready to buy,” explains Sandra.
Expanding into the digital space, however, proved to be more of a challenge than Sandra had anticipated. “The problem was that we were using the wrong platforms to sell our products” Sandra explains. “These platforms were mainstream and they were all I thought was available. But I soon learned that not only were they expensive, but they were time consuming, tedious, confusing and the level of customer service was enough to question your faith in humanity.”
At one point Sandra was ready to throw in the towel on the video products side of her business altogether… that is until she was introduced to Intelivideo.
